Our Sacred Inspiration

The lives of Emperor Constantine the Great and Saint Helen continue to illuminate the mission of our Order.

Chosen for Their Legacy

The Order honors Saint Constantine the Great and Saint Helen as its patron saints, chosen for their profound impact on Christianity and their embodiment of the values the Order upholds: faith, unity, service, and devotion.

Saint Constantine: Defender of the Faith

Constantine the Great was a transformative leader who reshaped history by embracing Christianity and ensuring its protection. His Edict of Milan (313 AD) granted religious freedom, allowing Christianity to flourish throughout the Roman Empire. He set a precedent for Christian governance, promoting unity among believers and reinforcing the faith’s role in public life. His courage and vision serve as an enduring inspiration for the Order’s commitment to defending and advancing Christian principles.

Saint Helen: A Model of Piety and Service

Saint Helen, Constantine’s mother, is revered for her unwavering faith and devotion. Her pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where she is said to have discovered the True Cross, symbolizes her deep commitment to Christ. Her charitable works and dedication to Christian service embody the Order’s mission to support the needy, uphold tradition, and strengthen the spiritual foundation of its members.

A Legacy That Guides the Order

Together, Saints Constantine and Helen represent the ideals of faith-driven leadership, charitable service, and steadfast unity. Their legacy continues to shape the Order’s mission, guiding its members to serve with honor, protect Christian values, and foster a spirit of fraternity. Through their example, the Order remains dedicated to upholding the timeless virtues that define the chivalric tradition.

Emperor Constantine the Great

Rise to Power and Conversion to Christianity

Born in 272 AD in Naissus (modern-day Niš, Serbia), Flavius Valerius Constantinus—later known as Constantine the Great—was the son of the Roman general Constantius Chlorus and Helena, a woman of humble origins who would later be venerated as Saint Helen. Constantine rose to prominence as a military leader, ultimately securing his position as the sole ruler of the Roman Empire after a series of victories, most notably at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD.

On the eve of this decisive battle, Constantine reportedly witnessed a vision of the Chi Rho, a Christian symbol formed by the first two Greek letters of “Christ” (ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ), along with the words: “In hoc signo vinces” (“In this sign, you will conquer”). Inspired by this divine revelation, he ordered his soldiers to adorn their shields with the symbol, leading to a pivotal victory. This moment is considered his turning point toward Christianity.

The Edict of Milan: Christianity’s Legitimization

In 313 AD, Constantine, along with his co-emperor Licinius, issued the Edict of Milan, granting religious tolerance throughout the Roman Empire and ending the persecution of Christians. This landmark decree allowed Christianity to flourish, securing its place as a major force in the empire.

Constantine actively promoted the faith by commissioning the construction of great churches, including the Old St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and by advocating for Christian unity through the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD).

The Founding of Constantinople: A New Christian Capital

In 330 AD, Constantine relocated the capital of the empire from Rome to Byzantium, renaming it Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). Designed as a “New Rome,” Constantinople became the center of Christian civilization for over a millennium, symbolizing the fusion of imperial power and faith.

The Significance of the Chi Rho Symbol

The Chi Rho (☧) became Constantine’s imperial standard, representing divine authority and victory under Christ. This symbol remains one of the most iconic emblems of Christian faith and is deeply tied to Constantine’s legacy as the emperor who paved the way for Christianity’s ascendance.

Constantine the Great’s life and reign not only reshaped the Roman Empire but also laid the foundations for Christian Europe, ensuring that his impact would be felt for generations to come.

From Eusebius of Caesarea, Life of Constantine

“At the time of his battle against Maxentius, Constantine saw with his own eyes the sign of the cross in the heavens, above the sun, and bearing the inscription, ‘In this sign, you will conquer.’ He and his army were struck with amazement at the sight, and upon victory, he recognized the power of Christ and embraced His faith.”

Saint Helen, Empress and Pilgrim

A Life of Faith and Influence

Saint Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, played a crucial role in shaping the Christian world. Born in the 3rd century, she rose from humble beginnings to become Empress of Rome after Constantine’s ascension. Deeply devoted to her faith, she embraced Christianity wholeheartedly, influencing her son’s policies and fostering the growth of the early Church.

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

In her later years, Saint Helen embarked on a historic pilgrimage to the Holy Land, a journey that left a lasting spiritual and historical impact. She traveled across Jerusalem and its surrounding regions, overseeing the construction of churches at significant Christian sites, including the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The Discovery of the True Cross

One of Saint Helen’s most revered contributions was the discovery of the True Cross, believed to be the very cross upon which Christ was crucified. According to tradition, she ordered excavations near Golgotha, where three crosses were found. Through divine inspiration and miraculous signs, the True Cross was identified, strengthening the Christian faith and becoming a powerful symbol of Christ’s sacrifice.

A Patron Saint of Faith and Devotion

Saint Helen is honored as the patron saint of archaeology, converts, and those facing difficult marriages. Her legacy continues to inspire those seeking spiritual guidance, unwavering faith, and perseverance in their journey. Through her devotion, discoveries, and patronage, she remains a beacon of faith and a guiding force in Christian history.

The Cross of Saint Helen, representing her discovery of the True Cross, is a reminder of faith’s enduring strength. These sacred insignias, along with the Order’s ceremonial dress and knightly oaths, reinforce the commitment of every member to live a life of righteousness and service.
